Ghanaian Community Tracey Towers

Ghanaian Community at Tracey Towers organizes a Mini Durbar

durbarThe Christian Journal, Bronx NY – The Ghanaian Community in conjunction with the tenant’s organization of Tracy Towers in the Bronx, New York spotlighted a durbar of traditional Ghanaian culture to mark their annual end of year get together.

In attendance was Ghana consular general in New York Mr. Joseph Ackoh, Assembly Mark Gjonaj of the 80th district in the Bronx, Jean Hill president of the tenant’s organization of Tracey towers, community leaders and local traditional chiefs.

Mr Addai Kwarteng the president of Ghanaian Community at Tracey Towers in his welcome address thanked the entire special invited guest, the association and everyone who was able to attend this special event. He said without you this event would not have been successful. He laid down the organization feature plans for the coming year by organizing a big durbar at the play grounds. Professionals will be invited to give lectures that will benefit everyone living in Tracey Towers, volunteers to help their newly established computer Lab and the support of everyone to help them achieve their goals.

Ms Jean Hill president of the Tenants organization at Tracey towers, in her remarks said they were much honored and please to be party on this mini durbar to learn the rich culture and heritage of the Ghanaian people. She said they welcome and accept the tradition and culture they have brought to America. We might be different nationalities in these buildings but we are one village of Tracey towers.

The management of the building extended the congratulations through Ms Turner.

Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj on his part was very grateful for the support that the community has given him and the opportunity to be there tonight to celebrate the durbar and witness the rich culture and colors of the Ghanaian people and the community at Tracey Towers. He acknowledged the hard work of the Ghanaians in New York City and as a back bone to the borough and community through their hard work. He urged to support them with every effort and donated $2500.00 toward their computer lab. He promised to support their big durbar next year. He said his office will welcome them anytime they can count on him.

Anita Benjamin spoke on behalf of the children of Tracey Towers, that they were very happy to see their parents create a computer lab for them where they can do their home work and do research on their school projects. She said will also serve as a place for friendship, harmony and safe haven since there will be an adult supervision. She appealed to each and everyone to continue to contribute their quota.

Mr. Joseph Ackoh Ghana Consul General New York, the keynote speaker was happy to be associated with this event which believe was for a very noble cause. He said he was very impressed with the representation of the Ghanaian culture and traditions with Nananom dressed in their regalia at this mini durbar. He urged Ghanaian not to forget their roots and maintain the very image of Ghanaians as very peaceful and law abiding people in the United States. We may be far away from home but we should stay united and make our country proud.

The rest of the night was dancing and a special performance from Ghana musician Prince Osei Kofi.
